ABOUT THIS GATEWAY
The Queensland Resources and Exploration Gateway (QUREX) helps businesses discover the advantages of investing in Queensland’s thriving resources exploration industry and provides them with opportunities for their future growth and prosperity.
QUREX’s vision is to be a catalyst for development and growth in the Queensland resources sector by attracting and facilitating business investment in the resources exploration industry.
QUREX plays an important role in connecting investors with the resources sector, government, industry associations, and business partners by providing information, tools, resources and support.
The QUREX Gateway was established in 2017 by the Queensland Exploration Council (QEC), supported by the Queensland Government’s Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy (DNRME) and Trade & Investment Queensland (TIQ)
QEC is a not-for-profit initiative of the Queensland Resources Council (QRC), the peak representative body for the state’s minerals and energy developers. QEC launched in 2010 and is recognised as the go-to member organisation in Queensland for bringing exploration and opportunity together.

What does the Queensland Exploration Council do?
The Queensland Exploration Council focuses on investment attraction initiatives that showcase Queensland as a leading investment destination. Queensland is rich in gas and many minerals, being the #1 source of traded coking coal, #2 source of lead, #3 source of bauxite and zinc and #5 source of silver globally. Queensland also has uranium and rare earth element potential.
Who leads the Queensland Exploration Council?
The Queensland Exploration Council is led by a diverse and highly skilled leadership team including Chair and CEO of Xplore Resources, Kim Wainwright supported by petroleum specialist Stephen Kelemen and coal specialist Darren Walker.
Who are the Queensland Exploration Council’s members?
The Queensland Exploration Council’s membership comprises the who’s who of the resources sector, together with members drawn from finance , accounting and legal sectors, events and marketing, research and government. The Queensland Exploration Council endeavours to influence perceptions about the importance of exploration, and promote Queensland’s prospectivity to investors and businesses that support the exploration sector.

Chair
Kim Wainwright
Kim holds a number of board and directorship positions in the exploration and mining sector including being CEO of Xplore Resources; a mining services company specialising in geological and exploration services. Kim is also Chair of a resources private equity fund that has acquired assets globally under Kim’s leadership. Kim started her first business in 2009 after ten years in Government; including holding high level public policy positions.
Deputy Chair, Petroleum & Gas
Stephen Kelemen
Stephen Kelemen is an independent industry executive. In addition to his QEC Deputy Chair Petroleum and Gas role, he is a member of the Core Energy Group Advisory Council and provides professional services to clients. Stephen has diverse petroleum industry experience including reservoir, development, operations, exploration, JV management, R&D and M&A evaluation developed through his 38 year career with Santos Ltd, as well as his extensive involvement with the industry.
Deputy Chair, Minerals & Coal
Darren Walker
Mr Darren Walker is currently a Senior Executive with U&D Coal Pty Ltd, a coal mine developer and explorer. He has over 18 years’ experience in exploration, mining operations, marketing and corporate management in coal, iron ore, gold and other metals as well as petroleum and gas and is passionate about exploration and the exploration industry. Darren holds a BSc (Hons) in Geology, a MBA, and is a competent person under JORC Code and is also Alternate Director – Exploration for the QRC.
